Expert Tips for Designing Villas, Vacation Homes, and Holiday Apartments

It is well known that the architecture and interior, and exterior design of spaces fashion a beautiful and functional villa, holiday home, or vacation apartment. Every detail matters, and each space tells its own design story. Design elements also play an important role in marketing tourist and hospitality properties. Attractive hotels, villas, holiday homes, and apartments are like treasure chests filled with storytelling ideas – perfect for selfies, social media videos, blog posts, and travel articles.
So, where should you start when designing a hotel, villa, house, or vacation apartment? One of the first steps is to consider the desires and needs of your potential guests – including everything from color schemes and materials to furnishings and hotel amenities.
All design choices should consider your guests’ preferences. Lighting, interior design, and decor work together to create an atmosphere that welcomes guests, inviting them to stay a while, relax, and enjoy themselves.
In this article and the other four, we guide you through trends in designing villas, vacation homes, and holiday apartments on creative examples from five projects by well-known Croatian interior designers, members of the Community of Interior Designers (ZADIN) – a professional association that includes interior designers, decorators, stylists, architects, landscape architects, garden designers, and other design enthusiasts.
Klis – Villa Lagom – Thoughtful Design That Encourages Conscious Living

Villa Lagom is built on the historic Klis, known for its magnificent view of Split and luxurious villas.
“The inspiration for the name of the Villa comes from the Swedish philosophy ‘Lagom,’ which emphasizes the importance of moderation and balance. Villa Lagom embodies this philosophy through thoughtful design that encourages conscious living, where everything is precisely balanced, neither too much nor too little, but exactly as much as it needs to be. Sustainable materials and timeless furniture create an ambiance that invites relaxation, conscious living, and harmony with the environment.”
“The decor balances modern elements with minimalism; natural materials, such as cotton, linen, and wood, make every detail thoughtful. The bedrooms, with private bathrooms, are decorated with natural materials and organic linens. The peach-fuzz kitchen, featuring a wine bar and island, connects the dining room to the living room, where a two-sided sofa offers panoramic views of Split, and cement coffee tables complete the space’s details.”

“The wellness area with an organic Finnish sauna, offers comfortable futon furniture from a Danish brand inspired by Japanese style, while the gym with a poker table, outdoor area with a heated pool, lounge area, and outdoor kitchen provides the perfect place to enjoy meals with a view of the sunset. The design of Villa Lagom is based on the philosophy of sustainability and harmony with nature, making it a true haven of peace and elegant simplicity,” explained interior designer Mia Sinovčić (Smart Art Design Studio) who, inspired by the story of an investor who wanted something different, connected the design with the environment and the interesting philosophy after which Villa Lagom got its name.
