It is widely known that the architecture and design of both interior and exterior spaces shape a beautiful and functional villa, holiday home, or vacation apartment. Every detail counts, and each space tells a design story. Design elements also play a crucial role in marketing tourist and hospitality properties. Attractive hotels, villas, holiday homes, and apartments are like treasure chests filled with storytelling ideas – perfect for selfies, social media videos, blog posts, and travel articles.

So, where should you start when designing a hotel, villa, house, or vacation apartment? One of the first steps is to consider the wishes and needs of potential guests – everything from color schemes and materials to furnishings and hotel amenities.

All design choices should anticipate the preferences of your guests. Lighting, interior design, and decor work together to create an atmosphere that welcomes guests, inviting them to stay a while, relax, and enjoy themselves.

In this article and the other four, we guide you through trends in designing villas, vacation homes, and holiday apartments on creative examples from five projects by well-known Croatian interior designers, members of the Community of Interior Designers (ZADIN) – a professional association that includes interior designers, decorators, stylists, architects, landscape architects, garden designers, and other design enthusiasts.

Two villas in the small village of Pomer in Istria, Croatia, offer everything we want in today’s lifestyle and vacation: a peaceful setting with a rural, Mediterranean vibe, and, on the other hand, a modern retreat for vacation and living near the city of Pula. Sun (Sunce) and Sea (More) are the names of these contemporary-designed vacation homes, which have views of the calming blue sea from upper floors, and a southern orientation provides an abundance of natural light.

“The investor prefers dark colors and minimalism in the design, which have been popular in recent years in interior design. We reached a compromise by incorporating a modern, contemporary style with a warmer feel through the application of wood. Specifically, I incorporated wood decor wherever possible—on the interior joinery, flooring, furniture, and the wood-imitation platform around the pool, which connects the exterior space to the interior design in style.”

“In addition to the wood tones, I further “warmed up” the space with an orange-yellow wall color, reinforcing my belief that interior design should be bold. The orange hue brought the necessary liveliness and dynamism to the space, contrasting with the black elements. Everything was additionally “softened” with curtains and plants. Sun and sea motifs also appear on the wall decorations, which complete the theme of the decor,” interior designer Maja Lončar Medić (ML Solutions) told us, who is responsible for the entire interior decoration, design, and project management.
