International Furniture Fair IMM Cologne 2014 – Latest trends in interior design

International Furniture Fair “IMM Cologne” lasted from 13th – 19th of January 2014 and it presented the latest trends in interior design. As always, the trends have offered solutions for different tastes and needs, so everybody can be trendy!

Current trends are pushing the boundaries and opening up new possibilities for personal creative expression and the possibilities of arranging materials and furniture elements. The story is similar with colors: unrestrained in its own selection and creation of space according to personal preferences. Incompatible materials become compatible and in these combinations create a completely new spatial atmosphere.

All lovers of natural materials will be satisfied, because the quest and desire for the presence of nature in the interior is still a hot topic. The use of wood and especially oak in different finishes and final colors, with extremely popular matt and ash tones, is the basis of interior design. Greenery, through the application of house plants and “green walls”, gives the interiors a natural and fresh look.

In contrast to the tendency of introducing nature into the interior, the latest trends shown at the IMM Fair emphasize the contradiction in the application of materials. In space this is expressed with different combinations of until now incompatible materials. Wood, which appears in a variety of colors, types and finishes, highlighting the space, is combined with plastic elements and “high-tech” fabrics. As a special addition there are lamps, decorative objects made of metal, individual pieces of furniture, which have a somewhat rugged, raw look, more appropriate for factories than residential areas.

Diversity and disparity become the basic features of space. Combining old and new opens up the possibility of buying old “second hand” items or pieces of furniture, which you can perfectly combine with the latest collections from the world famous furniture manufacturers. Do not worry about all the different sofas in the living room or various chairs around the dining table, because this is exactly the trend. Two or three seat sofas and armchairs should be completely different, and also the chairs in the dining room – according to model or color.

Use of leather combined with fabric is very popular, and this trend in which disparities prevail specially emphasizes the “patchwork” pattern. It appears on head rests, blankets and floor coverings. Frayed, worn-out look, with faded colors and patterns, is a real hit, especially in the world of carpets. When we are talking about carpets, it is important to note that they are a “must have”, especially in the living room and dining room. Completely uncovered floor is becoming unattractive, and the trend goes so far as to introduce two irregularly placed carpets one over the other. Exotic patterns such as those from Persian rugs or traditional patterns that remind us of the past are very popular.

Right word to depict the IMM 2014 trend is “Vintage” combined with simple, clean lines, and this applies to all the aspects of interior design. But, along with the “Vintage”, trends allow for another exhibition, and it is the application of distinctive items and pieces of furniture, made according to the “do it yourself” system.  Artists and mavericks, which have their own style, get a chance to publicly display their works with pride. Unusual, wacky, different from anything seen before – are all desirable features of space, and tools, materials and methods of their application are unlimited. It is important to note that there must be a certain harmony between the selected objects in order to have a harmonious atmosphere. Right there lies the art of every individual to find a right measure in the great freedom of design and decoration.

Mixing styles, combining old and new, redesigning, making your own individual elements of furniture or decoration, as well as the basic features of the trend, provide numerous options for creating attractive and challenging interiors. International Furniture Fair IMM 2014 in Cologne message is: Become part of a trend and give personality to your living space!
