The east side of Ban Jelačić Square is home to the most famous Zagreb well – Manduševac, the subject of numerous legends. According to one of these legends, the events surrounding Manduševac gave the city its name. In springtime, Manduševac gets a floral hug, and during Advent, it is an Advent wreath.

The park on Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square (Zrinjevac) is the oldest in the Lower Town, dating back to 1892. It is surrounded by ornate architecture from the Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Romanesque, and Classicism periods. Century-old plane trees and colorful flowers make it a natural gem in Zagreb’s urban center.

The Republic of Croatia Square and the Croatian National Theatre are among the key cultural landmarks in the center of Zagreb. The square is the final one in the arc of green city squares that formed the central design of Zagreb’s 19th-century urban plan. Renowned creators of many other European theatres, the architectural duo based in Vienna, Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, designed the Croatian National Theatre building in ornate Neo-Baroque style. Officially opened in 1895, the Croatian National Theatre houses the national opera, ballet, and drama companies.

Maksimir Park is a beloved place for relaxation, recreation, and socializing among Zagreb residents, and is ranked among Europe’s most beautiful city parks. This essential part of Zagreb’s and Croatia’s park and architectural heritage was built on the southernmost branches of Medvednica in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Maksimir is the first public park in Southeast Europe, and one of the earliest in the world.

Across Maksimir’s 316 hectares, many plant and animal species have found a home in the park’s centuries-old oak forests, meadows, lakes, and streams. For instance, more than a hundred bird species have been recorded here.

Bundek Park with Lakes

Bundek Park with Lakes is a newer park, renovated in 2006, and one of Zagreb’s favorite parks and promenades for spending a sunny day alfresco with friends and family. It is located along the Sava River in Novi Zagreb.

As a popular venue for numerous cultural, entertainment, and recreational events, it is especially visited in spring and summer.

Among the most renowned events is Floraart – International Garden and Flower Show. This creative happening takes place in the spring and showcases many florists and their garden art projects.
