Winter brings cold into our environment, but also the magical elegance of snow and ice. Lakes, meadows, fields, forests – they wear a snow-white gown decorated with fashion accessories made of ice. Sun’s rays peeking through this winter landscape start a game of crystals and colors. This scenery is the ideal foundation for building castles and hotels made of winter materials provided by Mother Nature. Let’s visit some of them.
LumiLinna (the SnowCastle), Kemi
LumiLinna (the SnowCastle) is situated in the Finnish town of Kemi, where local artists create true masterpieces from the snow and ice. Light effects in combination with winter buildings and sculptures create attractions that draw visitors from all around the world. Since the snow castle is built anew each winter season, every year visitors are greeted by a completely new look. Both the architecture and supporting facilities of this Lapland winter tourist jewel are fundamentally changed. On the 25th of January this year, the snow castle has been opened for the 19th time.
Arctic Snow Hotel, Rovaniemi
The Arctic Snow Hotel is located in the town of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi in Finland. Would you like to dine in the IceRestaurant, have a drink at the IceBar, feel the atmosphere of the Snow Sauna, sleep surrounded by fairy white snow, take a walk “in the company” of the Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights)? Well, you are in the right place. Many couples organize their wedding right here since Lapland offers plenty of romantic moments. The temperature in the rooms of the Snow Hotel is still in the range of zero to five degrees below zero, sleeping is in sleeping bags that are customized for these temperature conditions, and on the departure from the hotel, you receive a diploma for spending the night in the icy conditions of the Arctic. Arctic Snow Hotel will be open until the 31st of March this year.
“Hôtel de Glace” (the Ice Hotel), Quebec City
“Hôtel de Glace” or the Ice Hotel – translated from the French, is located in Quebec City, the capital of the Canadian province of Quebec. Ice Hotel has opened its doors this season on the 3rd of January, of course, completely redesigned. Myths and legends from around the world are the thematic foundation for the year 2014. This interesting tale is told by the artwork made of snow and ice. If you are about to travel to Canada, be sure to visit this interesting hotel that stays open until the 23rd of March.
Snow Village, Montreal
Have you ever dreamed of spending the night in a polar igloo? Precisely this is offered to guests of the Snow Village in Montreal, Canada. Each year, this winter wonderland will be designed as a snow and ice reproduction of a different city from around the world. The previous year, the city portrayed was “The Big Apple” – New York City. The beds in the hotel rooms have a base made of ice, combined with a wooden frame on which rests a mattress and a thermal sleeping bag. Although the ambient temperature can drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius, the temperature in the rooms is maintained at 5 degrees C. Light effects further decorate every bedroom in this winter hotel.
